At The VFR Foundation, we are privileged to stand In Service of Those Who Serve—and to honor the lives, legacies, and families of those who dedicated themselves to protecting others. Today, we pause to remember Lieutenant Dale Robert Christ, a lifelong public servant whose commitment to community and quiet humility continue to inspire us.
Officer Christ served the City of Independence, Ohio, with distinction from 1971 to 1999, retiring proudly as a Lieutenant. For nearly three decades, he protected his community while balancing night shifts, family life, and earning a degree in Business—a testament to his work ethic and unwavering sense of duty.
Born in 1949 and raised in Independence, Dale’s path to service began early. While attending Cleveland State University, he completed the civil service test and graduated from the police training academy, setting the foundation for a career defined by integrity, leadership, and compassion.
Beyond the badge, Dale was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. In retirement, he found peace at the family cabin in Warren, Pennsylvania—built by his father—and joy in birdwatching from the farmhouse he shared with his wife, Ellie Nape. Together, they explored the country on road trips, soaking in the beauty of America’s landscapes. And like so many Clevelanders, Dale remained a loyal Cleveland Indians fan, holding onto hope for that long-awaited World Series win.
A Widow’s Generosity That Continues the Mission

We are deeply honored that Ellie Nape, Dale’s wife of 17 years, chose to support The VFR Foundation following his passing on October 18, 2024. In a letter to our organization, Ellie shared not only memories of Dale’s life and character, but also her belief in the importance of supporting first responders in a time when their work is increasingly challenging and often misunderstood.
Her decision to become a monthly donor is more than a gift—it is a continuation of Dale’s legacy of service.
Because of supporters like Ellie, The VFR Foundation is able to provide critical resources, equipment, and programs that protect and support first responders and their families. Her generosity ensures that Dale’s commitment to public service lives on by helping today’s heroes stay safe, prepared, and supported.
In Service of Those Who Served
When we honor officers like Dale Christ, we are reminded that service does not end with retirement—and it does not end with loss. It lives on through families, communities, and the mission-driven support that organizations like The VFR Foundation are proud to provide.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Ellie for trusting us to carry forward Dale’s legacy. Her support allows us to honor those who served, protect those who serve today, and stand beside the families who sacrifice alongside them.
