Growth doesn’t happen by accident—it starts with intention, commitment, and the right guidance. From the very first class, the Kang Do Won Martial Arts program is designed with one clear purpose: to set children up to win in life.
Every child who steps onto the mat is met with a focused, structured, and deeply committed approach. The program is not just about martial arts—it’s about discipline, confidence, respect, and personal growth that extends far beyond the dojo.

At the center of this journey is Master Gary Hotchkiss, who leads by example every single day. His dedication to his students is evident in how the program nurtures children at every stage of development, from early childhood through the teenage years.
Growth at Every Age
The transformation seen in Kang Do Won students is
consistent and powerful—whether they are 6, 11, or 16 years old. Each age group shows solid, measurable growth, proving that the program meets students where they are and helps them rise to their full potential.
One standout example is Carson Knott, whose growth during his first year has been nothing short of outstanding.

Carson’s Story: Confidence Built One Class at a Time
Carson’s first class was on November 11th. At just 5 years old, he began his journey as a white belt—new, unsure of himself, and still learning what the experience would bring. As Mrs. Master Lewis noted, those early weeks are all about orientation, comfort, and trust.
From the beginning, everyone involved knew the outcome would be positive.
Over the course of the year, Carson experienced remarkable growth, especially in his self-confidence—which has increased tenfold. The benefits of the program have shown themselves in countless positive ways, all of which will continue to impact him for the rest of his life.
A Powerful Moment: Blue Belt Achievement

One of the most meaningful moments came when Master Gary Hotchkiss, who is also a career police officer, proudly presented Carson (“Gizmo”) with his Blue Belt. This moment carried special significance, as Master Hotchkiss has dedicated over 34 years to Kang Do Won, following in the footsteps of his own father, Grand Master Lewis, the founder of Kang Do Won Martial Arts.
Standing beside Carson during this achievement was his father, Cleveland Heights Police Officer Cameron Knott.
Officer Knott began his own Kang Do Won journey 27 years ago at the age of 4. Like father, like son. Just as Kang Do Won played a pivotal role in shaping Officer Knott’s life, it is now doing the same for 6-year-old Carson.
