National VFR Day: What It Means and How to Celebrate
Every day, veterans and first responders put service before self. They protect our communities, respond when we need them most, and carry responsibilities and experiences that most of us will never fully understand.
National VFR Day was created to make sure their service, sacrifice, and well-being are never overlooked.
Observed annually on the first Saturday in August, National VFR Day brings communities together to recognize our nation's veterans, military personnel, police officers, firefighters, EMS professionals, dispatchers, K-9 teams, and the families who stand beside them.
It is a day to say thank you — but it is also a day to remind those who serve that they have a community standing behind them.
How National VFR Day Began
The Veterans & First Responders Foundation was founded with a mission to provide healing support, resources, and innovative programming for First Responders, Veterans, Military, K-9s, and their families.
In June 2023, National Day Calendar officially granted the VFR Foundation the first Saturday in August as National VFR Day, establishing an annual day dedicated to supporting and recognizing our veterans and first responders.
The inaugural National VFR Day was celebrated on August 5, 2023, when the VFR Foundation welcomed first responders and their families to a Cleveland Guardians game at Progressive Field.
Among a crowd of approximately 40,000 fans were firefighters, law enforcement officers, dispatchers, EMS professionals, active-duty military members, veterans, and their families. The VFR Foundation provided 300 first responder families with an opportunity to enjoy a day of fun, recognition, and relaxation while bringing greater awareness to the people who serve our communities.
That first celebration established what National VFR Day is all about: Valor. Freedom. Respect.
What Does VFR Mean?
VFR stands for Veterans & First Responders, representing the men and women at the heart of our mission.
But those three letters have also come to represent something more:
Valor — honoring the courage demonstrated by those willing to put themselves in harm's way for others.
Freedom — recognizing the freedoms our military members and veterans have defended, sometimes at tremendous personal sacrifice.
Respect — showing our appreciation for the people who protect our communities and our country every day.
These principles guide not only National VFR Day, but everything the VFR Foundation works to accomplish throughout the year.
A Growing Tradition
Since that first celebration in 2023, National VFR Day has continued to grow.
In 2024, the VFR Foundation returned to Progressive Field for the second annual National VFR Day during the Cleveland Guardians vs. Baltimore Orioles game. Once again, baseball provided a backdrop for bringing first responders, families, supporters, and the community together.
The tradition has continued to evolve, reaching another milestone with the Fourth Annual National VFR Day on August 1, 2026, held in partnership with the Lake County Captains.
This year's celebration brought first responders, their families, community organizations, youth baseball teams, and supporters together for an evening dedicated to service and appreciation.
The VFR Foundation provided 300 complimentary tickets and meals to first responders and their families, helping give those who spend so much of their lives serving others an opportunity to simply enjoy an evening together.
The celebration included special guest appearances, VFR's Howling Heroes, first responders participating in the American flag presentation during the National Anthem, ceremonial first-pitch and VIP moments, a Lake County Captains baseball game, and a postgame fireworks spectacular presented by the VFR Foundation in honor of our responder community.
It was another powerful reminder of what can happen when an entire community comes together to recognize its heroes.
Why National VFR Day Matters
Recognition is important — but the meaning behind National VFR Day goes much deeper.
First responders and members of our military routinely experience stressful and traumatic situations as part of their service. Those experiences can have lasting effects on responders as well as their spouses, children, coworkers, and families.
That's why the VFR Foundation's mission extends far beyond a single day.
Throughout the year, the Foundation works to provide programs and resources supporting wellness, resilience, training, equipment, education, and community outreach.
National VFR Day gives all of us an opportunity to bring greater awareness to those needs while showing veterans and first responders that seeking support is a sign of strength and that they do not have to face life's challenges alone.
How You Can Celebrate National VFR Day
You don't have to attend an official VFR Foundation event to participate. National VFR Day belongs to every community and everyone who wants to show appreciation for those who serve.
Here are a few ways to take part:
Thank a Veteran or First Responder
Sometimes the simplest gesture can have the greatest impact. Thank a police officer, firefighter, EMT, dispatcher, veteran, military member, or other responder in your community and let them know their service is appreciated.
Recognize Their Families
Behind many of our veterans and first responders is a family that shares in the demands and sacrifices of service. National VFR Day is an opportunity to recognize spouses, children, parents, and family members as well.
Support First Responder and Veteran Programs
Consider donating to organizations that provide meaningful programs and resources to those who serve. Contributions to the VFR Foundation help us continue developing and supporting initiatives designed to make a real difference in the lives of veterans, first responders, K-9s, and their families.
Get Your Organization Involved
Businesses, schools, youth sports organizations, civic groups, and community organizations can recognize National VFR Day through employee initiatives, fundraising events, community celebrations, social media campaigns, or partnerships with local police, fire, EMS, military, and veteran organizations.
Share National VFR Day
