Nick was abandoned as a puppy, tied to a fire hydrant near the Newburgh Fire Department in 2016. The fire fighters adopted him as their fire house dog and he began his career in 2018. Nick was an important part of everyday life at the fire house. He responded to thousands of fire calls alongside his fire fighter brothers. Nick made many public appearances in the busy city and helped teach adults and children about fire safety. In 2021, Newburgh fire fighter Tim Dexter published a children's book entitled "The True Story of Nick the Fire Dog." Nick and his fire fighter dad both retired on the same day in 2023.
